Former Transportation Secretary Buttigieg Endorses Gabe Vasquez for Re-Election

LAS CRUCES, NM– Today, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg endorsed NM-02 Congressman and Democratic nominee Gabe Vasquez for re-election.

“At a time when many in Congress seem more focused on scoring political points than doing their actual job, Congressman Vasquez has taken a different approach,” said former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “He’s rolled up his sleeves and delivered for New Mexico time and time again. He’s demonstrating how much a new generation of leadership can contribute toward fixing what’s broken in Washington by actually working across party lines to support cattle ranchers, lower energy costs, and make life better for people. We need more of that in Washington, and I’m proud to be in his corner.”

Both leaders are representative of a new wave of Democrats relentlessly focused on finding commonsense solutions and working across party lines to deliver results for their constituents. While Secretary Buttigieg was Transportation Secretary, he and Congressman Vasquez delivered millions in critical infrastructure projects across southern and central New Mexico including the Grant County I-10 Improvement Project and the Atrisco Vista Boulevard improvement project in Bernalillo which in turn strengthened New Mexico’s local economy.

“I am honored to have received Pete’s endorsement,” said NM-02 Congressman and Democratic nominee Gabe Vasquez. “At the end of the day, I was elected to represent and fight for New Mexicans, and I’m not interested in the petty politics and distractions that so much of Washington is focused on. I came here to work for my constituents, and that’s what I plan to continue to do when I am re-elected in November.”

Congressman Gabe Vasquez is the only Democrat to have won New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District twice consecutively. In 2022, he beat incumbent Yvette Herrell by the tightest margin in the country (0.7%). Last cycle, Congressman Vasquez again defeated Yvette Herrell, this time by 4%— the same year that Donald Trump won the district by 2% — making him one of just 14 Democrats to win a district that went for Trump in 2024. Congressman Vasquez has continued to win over Democrat, Republican and Independent voters because he is willing to work with anyone to deliver results for New Mexicans on the issues they care most about: lowering the cost of living, expanding access to health care, protecting our public lands, and fixing our broken immigration system. In November, he will set another historic record by winning New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District for a third consecutive cycle.
