Las Cruces, NM – Gabe Vasquez’s campaign for Congress has declared victory in New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional district, defeating incumbent Yvette Herrell 50.31% – 49.67%. In one of the nation’s top House races, Gabe Vasquez’s personal story and record of serving his community propelled him to an important victory for New Mexico families.
“Make no mistake about it, there’s nothing that happens in Washington that New Mexico can’t do better,” said Gabe Vasquez. “To everyone out there struggling, no matter whether you voted for me or not, please know this: I see you, I hear you, and I’ll fight my heart out for you, because public service is a sacred responsibility that I will never take for granted.”
This race was a high priority one for both Democrats and Republicans from the beginning, as Vasquez was one of the first candidates named to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s coveted ‘Red to Blue’ program. Millions were spent on both sides, but Vasquez focused his message on building an economy that works for everyone and protecting people’s rights, including women’s right to an abortion.
Vasquez will now represent one of the largest districts in the nation – home to rural, urban and native communities – one of the most Hispanic districts in the nation, and the second longest border district in the country. He pledges to work with every community in the district and bring investments and economic opportunities home to New Mexico’s Second District.
