Las Cruces, NM – Representative Yvette Herrell will campaign in Carlsbad, NM on Sunday with fellow anti-reproductive freedom extremists Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Mark Ronchetti, the Republican gubernatorial nominee. All three are staunch opponents of reproductive freedom. Herrell claims Roe v. Wade was based on “garbage legal reasoning” and compared it to “eugenics,” while DeSantis recently suspended a prosecutor who signed a pledge to not prosecute people under Florida’s new abortion ban.
“New Mexicans believe women must have the freedom to make their own healthcare decisions. Yvette Herrell wants to rip those rights away,” said Gabe Vasquez, the Democrat challenging Herrell in New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District. “Yvette Herrell, Ron DeSantis, and Mark Ronchetti want to force an extreme agenda in which the government controls women’s reproductive decisions. New Mexicans won’t let them.”
Republican House members will impose a national abortion ban if they retake majorities in Congress. Yvette Herrell has been hellbent on imposing a ban since she was elected, co-sponsoring the Life at Conception Act, which would ban all abortions – even in the instance of rape or when the life of an individual is at risk – as well as certain types of birth control such as IUDs.
Voters overwhelmingly support the right to choose and are furious that radical Republicans continue to push dangerous abortion bans – and it’s shown at the ballot box. Last week in Kansas, voters overwhelmingly defeated a constitutional amendment to rip away the right to an abortion. With Herrell and Vasquez staking out opposite positions on reproductive freedom, abortion will be a key issue in a critical campaign to decide who controls the U.S. House in 2023; and whether Republicans will be able to pass their extreme national abortion ban.
