“Make no mistake: Social Security is on the ballot this November”

Las Cruces, NM – Today, NM-02 Congressman and Democratic nominee Gabe Vasquez announced that he had earned the endorsement of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare PAC, adding to the growing list of organizations backing his campaign and his record of fighting to protect Social Security and Medicare for New Mexico.

“New Mexicans deserve the Social Security benefits they’ve worked hard for and paid into their entire lives — not broken promises from politicians who say one thing on the campaign trail and do another in Washington,” said Democratic candidate and incumbent Gabe Vasquez. “MAGA extremists in Congress have already gone after Medicaid and SNAP to pay for tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. Now they want working people to trust them with Social Security? I don’t buy it. Greg Cunningham has pledged himself to Donald Trump and MAGA leadership. I’ll always stand with New Mexico seniors and working families and fight to bring down their cost of living, and I’m proud to have the endorsement of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare PAC.”

“The next Congress will likely decide the future of Social Security, with the trust fund projected to become depleted in 2032. Make no mistake: Social Security is on the ballot this November, and voters need to know where their candidates really stand. Gabe Vasquez has demonstrated that he will protect and strengthen Social Security, and we are proud to endorse him for re-election,” said NCPSSM President Max Richtman.

While Republicans in Congress misleadingly claim they are protecting Social Security, New Mexicans should look at the record and the agenda behind the promises. Gabe Vasquez has repeatedly fought to protect Social Security, including supporting bipartisan legislation to strengthen the program and demanding answers when the administration made conflicting claims about seniors’ Social Security benefits.

Meanwhile, Gabe’s opponent Greg Cunningham is running with the endorsement of President Donald Trump and has pledged to make advancing Trump’s agenda in Congress his “number one priority.” With Social Security facing a major financing deadline in the next decade, voters deserve a representative who has demonstrated that they will protect the benefits seniors have earned and put New Mexicans first — not someone who has already pledged allegiance to the MAGA leadership in Washington.

To date, Gabe has also earned the endorsements of AFGE Local 1050; AFT New Mexico; Brady PAC; Committee of Interns and Residents of New Mexico; AFSCME Council 18; New Mexico Carpenters Local 1319; CWA Unidos Local 7076; Education Votes; Equality PAC; Giffords PAC; Human Rights Campaign; IBEW Local 611; Latino Victory; League of Conservation Voters; Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate; MoveOn; National Wildlife Action Fund; NRDC Action Fund; National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare; New Mexico State Council of Machinists; New Mexico Federation of Labor; New Mexico Professional Fire Fighters Association; New Mexico State College Dems; The Next 50; Organizers in the Land of Enchantment (OLÉ); Repro Freedom For All; Semilla Action; Sierra Club; SMART Local 49; Stop Gun Violence PAC; and Young Democrats of New Mexico.

Gabe is the only Democrat to have won New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District twice consecutively. In 2022, he beat incumbent Yvette Herrell by the tightest margin in the country (0.7%). Last cycle, Gabe again defeated Yvette Herrell, this time by 4%— the same year that Donald Trump won the district by 2% — making him one of just 14 Democrats to win a district that went for Trump in 2024. Gabe has continued to win over Democrat, Republican and Independent voters because he is willing to work with anyone to deliver results for New Mexicans on the issues they care most about: lowering the cost of living, expanding access to health care, protecting our public lands, and fixing our broken immigration system. In November, he will set another historic record by winning New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District for a third consecutive cycle.
